Most societies, around the country, consist of groups of people in an area who have formed an organization with the common purpose of negotiating with local mortuaries to provide end-of-life care to an individual member as that person desires. The member completes a directive, to be carried out by the mortuary, outlining just what the member prefers. Until recently, most mortuaries regularly denied requests for simple death care, simplicity that threatened their profits. Public demand and growth of Memorial Societies has now induced many mortuaries to offer simple care, but not necessarily at appropriately reasonable cost.
