Founded in 1890, the original missionaries came to serve as the cornerstone of medical services in a place where the growing and exporting of sugar cane was burgeoning. The Koloa Missionary Church was built by Dr. Jared Smith, who was the very first western doctor on the island. The hospital was then operated by his son, who then purchased in 1954 and converted to a church. Until recently, church services were held in the old medical building.
