It is a collaboration between the Garfield School District’s Life Skills program and the Garfield Police Community Affairs Division, specifically designed to empower special needs high school students and prepare them for life after graduation. The program provides hands-on experience in the food industry while also teaching valuable life skills such as financial literacy. The coffee shop has also been entirely funded by grants and community members. It's run by the students, volunteers and teachers. The coffee shop's location is also unique, as it operates as a pop-up shop at the Century Field House kitchen during the warmer months and moves indoors to the local YMCA in Garfield, NJ during the winter, both of which host the students free of charge. The fact that the coffee shop is fully sustainable by coffee sales and has received positive reviews is a testament to the quality of the coffee and the dedication of the students and volunteers involved in the program. Additionally, the goal of eventually having a brick-and-mortar location shows the long-term vision and commitment to the success of the program and its participants.
