   MoreBuilt in 1910, the avant-garde Southern Theater has been promoting the arts ever since. Decidedly ahead of its time, it was the only theater in the area to have an exchange program with the Södra Teatern in Stockholm. Apart from Swedish plays, vaudeville shows, drama and variety acts went up on stage-till the theater's closure in the late 40s. The Guthrie Theatre eventually gave the Southern Theater a new lease (no pun intended) on life and since 1981 has been playing host to a number of independent artists. The Southern Theater now a preferred venues for many local as well as national artists and touring bands.
