He spent the next four years at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Following dental school, Dr. Means was commissioned a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps where he spent the next two years as an Army dentist at Ft. Polk, La. He, his wife Carla, and baby daughter then moved to Edinboro because Dr. Means accepted an associate dentist position in the pediatric dentistry practice of Dr. Frank Petinatto in Erie.
