Roadway Moving in action
Two Roadway Moving employees bid farewell after assisting with a move (Roadway Moving) (Roadway Moving)

With more than three thousand customer reviews across Google, Angi and Yelp, Roadway Moving achieved near-perfect scores. Operating out of multiple U.S. states, Roadway Moving offers its services across the five New York boroughs, including full packing and unpacking, storage, assembly and disassembly, and furniture disposal options.

Fully licensed and insured to operate in the Big Apple, Roadway Moving offers a thorough quote system that can involve building a full home inventory and scheduling a virtual walk-through. Speaking to Yahoo Local, Anne Marquette, a senior relocation consultant for Roadway Moving, shared the importance of a thorough list of all the items being moved as "what's in your three-bedroom home might be completely different than the next person's three-bedroom home." Roadway Moving's use of a flat fee accounts for your comprehensive inventory and aims to avoid an hourly rate that might work against customers living in such a built-up metropolitan area, Marquette says.

The company wouldn't provide a specific price estimate for our moving scenario without a virtual walkthrough, but our range estimate from others who have used the service is between $1,200 and $1,500 for a typical two-bedroom apartment.

[I] was looking at a few different options when moving before going with the Roadway and [they] DID NOT disappoint! We had a lot of marble pieces, glassware, and weirdly shaped furniture, but the movers efficiently disassembled everything and packed very carefully. Nothing got broken or dented; everything was in absolutely perfect shape when we arrived and they unpacked and put everything together in a new place. All movers had a fantastic attitude and made the process stress free and enjoyable for us. We just watched in awe at how fast and skillfully they did their job. Highly recommend! - Ulia Aliyeva, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

To lock in your move day, Roadway Moving charges a deposit of 10% of your quote. This can lead to a higher deposit than other companies that charge a flat fee. In addition to moving, Roadway also provides storage options and can assist with delicate moves, such as large pianos, valuable artwork and pool tables.

Roadway Moving is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating. It has had 12 complaints in the last three years with two being closed in the past year. Compared to other ranked companies on this list, this is not too high of a number. All movers for Roadway Moving have been background-checked.

Three staff members for Great Movers NYC carefully load a moving truck.
Three staff members for Great Movers NYC carefully load a moving truck. (Great Movers NYC) (Great Movers NYC)

Serving New Jersey and New York City, Great Movers is our second pick on the list. With a five-star rating on Yelp, and 4.9 stars out of five on Google and Angi, Great Movers has received glowing feedback. The owners have been working in the moving industry for 25 years, and in 2011 they took that experience to start their own company: Great Movers.

Great Movers runs regular training sessions for all staff and new employees are trained to safely lift and manage all the requirements of taking care of your belongings. When the crew arrives, they'll load and unload the truck, assist with the disassembly of basic furniture, and dismount A/C units and TVs. However, they will not remount those units in your new home. Great Movers offers an in-house bin rental and pickup service once you're done with them. These plastic boxes can hold three cubic feet of storage and can be dropped off at your home 10 days before your move and picked up 10 days after it. Additionally, they can provide longer-term storage, these items can be deposited during your move and then dropped off again at a more convenient time - perfect if you have a multi-stage move.

For Yahoo Local's two-bedroom apartment quote, Great Movers was one of the lowest quotes offered at $989 for a three-person crew and truck. They take a flat $100 deposit fee and charge an additional 5% if you pay using a credit card.

Do it. Higher [sic] the movers!! but most importantly higher [sic] THESE movers! Incredible from start to finish! I spent the move playing with my kids in our new home while our items were well cared for and placed where needed. It was an unbelievable moving experience. We had zero stress moving and couldn’t be more thankful! The crew was so friendly, being beyond kind to my children as well...They were prompt in response to scheduling and arrival on moving day. They listened to everything we asked and really put in the utmost effort. - Candice Needham, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

We spoke with Salvatore Diaz, a moving consultant with Great Movers, about the staff working on the moving crews. Sal shared that all employees are vetted, full-time, and that the company does not use day laborers. Many of the crew members have been with the company for five years or more, Diaz said.

Garcia and his team were extremely professional, going above and beyond to make sure the move was seamless for me and my fiance. I really appreciated how efficient they were and would highly recommend them again. Also, Brian was a great rep to work with - he was able to properly itemize the stuff that we were moving and did a great job following up with us every step of the way to ensure we were receiving quality service. When we move out of our apartment and into a house I'll be going with Vector Movers again. Thanks for everything, guys! - Wasiu Saba, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

A Get There Moving van
A Get There Moving van (Get There Moving) (Get There Moving)

Get There Moving was started in 2010 by two friends in Brooklyn. Owner Ed Hourigan says he focuses on quality above all else. It shows in the glowing reviews on Google, Yelp, and a perfect five-star rating on Angi. Get There Moving is a small outfit that offers a range of services, including private storage and access to self-storage partners. Furniture and long-distance delivery and packing are also available.

Horrigan is involved with every facet of the operation. When Yahoo Local reached out for a quote, he quickly responded and even offered referrals to other moving services when our first-choice date wasn't available. Booking in advance is a must with Get There Moving due to the size of the staff and operation.

Once we found a date that worked, Ed quoted a flat fee of $2,000 for the move, which is higher than many quotes from companies on this list. Horrigan said the moving crew is composed entirely of full-time staff and they never use subcontractors.

Like many moving companies, Get There Moving has an online system for submitting an inventory to help you get an accurate quote. However, compared to other companies we evaluated, its page is less polished and relegates most of the inventory into an "other" box.

Excellent, excellent moving service. They are meticulous and VERY smart. It's obvious that all the workers are treated well, enjoy their work, and take a lot of care. Definitely not just people who will throw stuff into a truck and bang all your fragile things up and down the stairs. I would never move with any other company. These guys are total pros! - Yiyi Zhang, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Get There Moving offers long-distance services and handles the process entirely itself. This makes it more expensive than services that utilize tractor-trailers and different crews, but it will likely be faster. And using the same crew who loaded the truck means they're familiar with your specific move.

Horrigan provided us with a flat-fee quote, but an hourly option is available as well. However, the rate is dependent on the type of move, truck and crew required. Get There Moving has a limited fleet with a small and trusted crew. All crew undergo a background check when hired.

You can reach out to Get There Moving at 718-599-9100 or get a free quote on their website.

The company's focus is local moving, but Gentle Giant also offers craning solutions, storage, and packing services. Gentle Giant's in-house supplier, Top Box, sells all the supplies needed to prepare for a move.

Securing a free estimate from Gentle Giant is an easy process. The online tool is thorough and accommodating, even if you don't know your specific move date. Gentle Giant charges additional time in 15-minute increments, at $206 an hour each 15-minute overage would run you around $51. The company also asked for a $200 deposit, which is higher than most others in the ranking.

Packing materials were not included in the fees. Some companies featured here offer a number of complimentary wardrobe, mattress, and TV boxes, but not Gentle Giant. However, the company's 100% crew guarantee promises to return your money if any of your crew member expectations aren't met, which is unique to Gentle Giant in our rankings.

Gentle Giant are excellent. Andrew and Rachel did a marvelous job planning our moves and Ezra and his crews (we recently contracted for 5 moves) did a fabulous job—prompt, efficient, careful, and friendly. I recommend Gentle Giant Movers unreservedly. They will treat you, your possessions, and your home in an exemplary manner. Excellent Quality Movers employees pose by a work truck (Excellent Quality Movers) (Excellent Quality Movers)

Excellent Quality Movers was founded in 2006 and is based in Brooklyn, N.Y., where is serves the New York metropolitan area and surrounding states. Company manager, Sergei Medvedev, has more than 20 years of experience in the moving industry, specifically in NYC. Medvedev takes a hands-on approach to managing Excellent Quality Movers' fleet of 14 trucks.

Yahoo Local spoke with Medvedev for a quote. While the company offers flat-fee rates, Sergei recommended a four-person crew at a rate of $200 per hour for cash payments, or $210 per hour if you pay with a credit card. A travel fee equal to one hour's pay is added to cover the commute and fuel fees for the truck. The crew also sells a bevy of packing supplies should you need anything on the day of the move. A Certificate of Insurance (COI), if required, is also available for $40.

Assuming a six-hour move, like the other quotes in this ranking, the final cost would come out to $1,400 in cash or $1,470 with a card payment. No deposit is required to secure your move date. To get a flat rate quote, a pre-move visit is required so the crew can assess how much packing work is needed. Excellent Quality Movers offers packing services and wholesale box purchases, but storage is not available through the company.

I don’t write reviews often, but choosing Excellent Quality Movers is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Andrey and his team were simply amazing. The level of professionalism displayed was phenomenal. They were punctual, efficient, pleasant, and completed my move in only 2.5 hours (this includes loading at the pick up location, travel time, and unloading at the drop off location). They organized my boxes into the appropriate areas without me having to say anything...I will absolutely use Excellent Quality Movers if I move again in the future, and will definitely be recommending this moving company to others for their outstanding service! - Kendra Norman, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Excellent Quality Movers is licensed to operate across state lines and background checks all movers. While it is well-regarded on Google and Yelp, it has a slightly lower average score on Angi with a rating of 4.3 stars, which is one of the lower Angi scores of the movers in this ranking.

Medvedev was friendly to work with when building our quote and made himself available if we had any further questions. Lucky and his team were super awesome - these guys could be Olympic athletes, so strong and agile! They were friendly, kind and very efficient and careful with our move. We had to move twice due to an issue with our new apartment, and they were so great we requested them for the second move too! They even took the time to help us find personal effects that were hidden in boxes due to the double move and were communicative the whole time while we were in limbo. We would definitely use them for our next move. A+ service!!! - Natalie Chan, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

You should still consider some key factors when making your decision, and your personal circumstances will help dictate your best option.

The most important one for many people is budget. A lot of the companies on this list fall in a similar ballpark range for flat fee rates, but some are quite a bit more expensive than their peers. Consider the various additional fees that may come into play on top of labor. You also want to go with a company that has been around for several years and carries a good reputation. If value is your primary consider, give Great Movers of NYC a look.

Availability is another factor. In speaking with the companies on this list, the summer season is clearly their busiest time of year. Some companies may not be able to accommodate a move on short notice, which is why we made it a point to call out those more likely to be able to help in an emergency. If you need a last-minute move, consider Piece of Cake Moving & Storage. If your move date is flexible, this may not be as critical.

The best moving company in Queens overall is Roadway Moving. The company commands excellent review scores across Google and Yelp with thousands of reviews logged. Most of the moving companies we spoke to in Queens required similar information for a quote, so it can help to have it all ready to make the quote process as smooth as possible.

Each moving company will likely ask whether you're moving from a home or an apartment, along with the number of bedrooms. It can also help to have the square footage for the starting home available. Some companies ask for an address for the starting location and destination, but often a zip code is all that's needed.

It's helpful to list large furniture pieces you have to move, as some companies use that in their calculations. Be sure to note any additional services you may require, such as storage or packing. Coming ready with an estimate of the number of boxes you'll need to move can help with the process as well.

Space is a luxury in New York City so even a small storage locker may be a burden on your budget. If you can sacrifice not being able to visit the unit in person, many of the storage options offered by the companies in this list maintain private storage shops so you only pay for what you use, rather than a full locker.

Multi-level apartments often require you to reserve an elevator when moving in or out. Make sure to contact your building's management for details. If necessary, note the reserved time and coordinate with your movers to make sure you stay within that window. If your building only has stairs, you may be charged extra for each flight movers have to climb.

No, you don't need a permit or license to move to or from Queens. The moving companies you work with, however, are required to be licensed by the New York State Department of Transportation. Your building manager may also request a Certificate of Insurance. Some companies charge for this document while others include it for free. You may also need parking permits for your moving truck.

Tipping isn't ever required or even expected for movers like it is for waiters, but it is appreciated. If your movers went the extra mile and you want to show your appreciation, you should tip between 10% and 20% of the total moving cost. Tips can be left to individual movers, or you can tip a lump sum to be split up by the crew supervisor.

You can also say thank you in other ways, like offering cold drinks to your crew while they work.
